Agency provides temporary dogs

  • *Fact* There are approximately 60,000 hairs per square inch on the back of a cat and about 120,000 per square inch on its underside.
  • *Quote* If there are no dogs in Heaven, then when I die I want to go where they went

A business operating on both U.S. coasts is doing its bit to respond to the market for companionship by renting dogs. Flexpetz, which began in San Diego, opened branches in New York and Los Angeles last year, The New York Times reports.
The agency gets its rental dogs from animal shelters and the ultimate goal is to find them permanent homes. Renters are carefully screened and required to watch a one-hour video. They also pay $279.95 a month membership, including four one-day rentals, plus $45 a day for any rentals past
that.

Chris Haddix, a graduate student in philosophy who runs the New York branch, said New Yorkers want small dogs. Big ones are popular on the West Coast.  "A lot of people out there are looking for companionship," he said.  New York newcomer Sarah Stevenson said meeting people is easier
when she is walking Oliver, a tiny cockapoo. Stacy Faulkner, a Flexpetz client in San Diego, said she rents a dog because her Rottweiler died two years ago and she's not ready to commit to a new pet.

DOG TIP

Never punish a pup by putting (or forcing) him in his home. He will begin to associate the home with punishment and will not ever want to so inside or will think he has been bad whenever he is told to go inside.

CAT TIP

If your cat is a picky eater, there are a few things you can do to make the food more palatable. Try moistening the food with a little water or broth. Warming the food can enhance the flavor. Adding some canned food may make it more enticing. Make sure she is not filling up
on treats or human food. If your cat is not eating well, see your veterinarian.
